【汇报题目】Does OFDI Affect the Professionalization of Chinese Family Firms? The Moderating Role of the Openness of Home Region

【摘要】This study investigates the effects of OFDI on the professionalization of Chinese family firms. Based on the view of liability of origin and in light of the specificity of emerging markets, we argue that when investing into developed markets, Chinese family firms will professionalize by hiring nonfamily top executives to mitigate liabilities of origin. Considering the liabilities of origin faced family firms vary in different subnational environments, we additionally argue that this OFDI-professionalization relationship is moderated by subnational heterogeneity in openness to foreign markets. Using a sample of 1111 Chinese listed family firms during the year of 2005 to 2017, we found that both of firms'  OFDI scale and OFDI scope have a positive impact on the level of professionalization in TMT. This positive effect is weakened by a higher level of exports and a higher level of inward FDI in the family firms'  home region.
