The Power of the School of Business in Poverty Alleviation
Poverty alleviation is an important strategic plan of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council. At the important moment of the centenary of the founding of the CPC, China has won a comprehensive victory in the fight against poverty. The Party Committee of the School of Business has always attached great importance to poverty alleviation work, earnestly fulfilled its social responsibilities, adhered to the coordination between upper and lower levels, carried out all-round and multi-level activities to help the poor, explored new ways for poverty alleviation work, which highlights its eagerness to serve the country.
1. Carry out field research and realize a new model of poverty alleviation through science and technology
From 2009 to 2013, the Party Committee of the School of Business conscientiously undertook the task of counterpart supporting three households in hardship in Qinkou Village, Longwo Town, Zijin County, Heyuan City. In the past five years, the Party Committee and individuals of the school have spent more than 100,000 yuan on poverty alleviation and condolences. Two households who were counterpart supported built new houses, and all three households got rid of poverty.
2. Undertake the counterpart supporting task and win the battle against poverty
From March 2013 to March 2016, the Party Committee of the School of Business conscientiously undertook the task of counterpart supporting two households in hardship in Zhongtian Village, Baoan Town, Lianzhou City, Qingyuan City. The faculty funded 10,000 yuan in the donation initiated by the School of Business in 2017, and the school launched the renovation of dilapidated houses with the support of local government policies, allowing the poverty-stricken households to live in small buildings.
3. Actively raise funds for village construction and build a beautiful new countryside
Since November 2017, the Labor Union, Alumni Associations and Youth League Committee of the School of Business initiated voluntary donation activities for the faculty, alumni and students of the school, and raised a total of 76,942.73 yuan. At the same time, with the support of the school, the 200,000 yuan raised was eventually used to support the construction of a beautiful and tidy village in Kemuwan Village, Qingyuan City.
4. Support poor children and practice the concept of targeted poverty alleviation
In November 2017, the Labor Union of the School of Business, together with the Alumni Associations and Youth League Committee, carried out a "one-on-one" fundraising activity of 2017 school year for the faculties, students and alumni of the School of Business, to support the poor students in Fengqing County, Yunan Province. A total of 128,000 yuan was raised to fund 128 poor students in Tuanshan Primary School, Guodazhai Township. In October 2018, a total of 224,000 yuan was raised to fund 124 poor students in Tuanshan Primary School, Guodazhai Township, Fengqing County, and 100 poor students in Qingshu Central School, Fengshan Town.
5. Give full play to the advantages of disciplines and explore new ways for poverty alleviation through e-commerce
On November 15th, 2018, Qi Xiaoping - then Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Business, led a team to Kemuwan Village, Fengyang Town, Lianzhou City, which's the designated village for poverty alleviation and development support by Sun Yat-sen University. The Poverty Alleviation Team worked out feasible plans and measures for Xiadong Village to help Kemuwan Village achieve better economic development.
On July 14th, 2019, Secretary Xie Manhua and Deputy Secretary Zhou Jing of the Party Committee of the School of Business led the "Three to the Countryside" Social Practice Volunteer Service Team to Kemuwan Village, Lianzhou City, Qingyuan City to carry out a one-week social practice. They went deep into the countryside to visit farmers, made sales cards, and explained e-commerce tools for them.
6. Give full play to the role of cadres and do a good job in poverty alleviation
Since May 2017, Yu Liren - then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Business, began to serve as Deputy County Magistrate in Fengqing County for poverty alleviation (Fengqing County, Yunnan Province designated national-level poverty-stricken county by Sun Yat-sen University). From 2017 to 2018, a total of 3.037 million yuan of donations and funding were introduced, and investment of 110 million yuan was attracted in 2018.
Professor Tian Yu from the School of Business, Sun Yat-sen University has worked in Hunan for six years since 2009 to promote poverty alleviation and the discipline construction of Jishou University. In the past two years, 205 internal and external investment projects were obtained for Xiangxi Prefecture, with more than 4.7 billion yuan actually in place.
From June 2014 to February 2016, Yang Huayue - an undergraduate counselor of the School of Business, Sun Yat-sen University, served as the cadre and Deputy Secretary of the Party Branch of Zhongtian Village, Baoan Town, Lianzhou City. He completed the construction project with more than 8 million yuan invested by the school, and 308 people from 87 poverty-stricken households in Zhongtian Village have all completed the poverty alleviation task.
7. Organize volunteer groups and advocate a series of activities for poverty alleviation and education
The MBA Volunteer Group of the School of Business, Sun Yat-sen University and the EMBA Alumni Council Public Welfare Association are non-profit organizations composed of students, alumni, and faculty and staff. They organize voluntary service activities and advocate a series of activities for poverty alleviation and education.
