On the afternoon of May 18th, 2018, the Research Team of “Internet Management Innovation” of Sun Yat-sen University held the 324th Lecture on Management and Economics of Business School. The theme of the lecture was: research on the job crafting and management mode of service industry under cross-cultural background, and it was given by Associate Professor Wang Haijiang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and presided over by Associate Professor Zhao Xinyuan from our school.

Associate Professor Wang Haijiang graduates from Eindhoven University of Technology, Holland, and he mainly studies: job design, job stress, and leadership and employee’ job involvement, he has published several papers in international journals, such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, and he has ever won the best conference paper at the Conference on Industrial and Organizational Psychology in Holland (2016), the best posting paper at the Conference on Industrial and Organizational Psychology in America (2012), the best conference paper at the Conference on Management in America (2011), and the second prize at the National Psychology Conference (2009), etc.

Starting from the theoretical background of job crafting-- Job Design Theories, Associate Professor Wang Haijiang mentioned that people’s preliminary thought about job design was: man is the carrier of work (1.0), don’t consider human thoughts in work (2.0), but is gradually developed into: people should satisfy the need of self-actualization in their work and reflect their values (3.0) with the continuous development of social productivity and information technology, thus job crafting emerged as the times required. And then, from the role perspective and resource perspective of the research on job crafting in academic circle currently, he explained scholars’ different understandings of job crafting, expounded the importance of the research on job crafting in work practice and positive psychological operation, and also introduced the research result and progress from the antecedents and consequences of job crafting.

On the basis of the high summary of research field, Teacher Wang mainly discussed some thoughts on the future research: 1. What was the impact of collectivism and individualism on the job crafting under cross-cultural background? 2. Considering that the service industry has the characteristics of employees’ strong work autonomy and heavy workload, customers’ diversified demands, and so on, the job crafting behavior of the employees in service industry would be a research hotspot. 3. Based on the theory of psychological ownership, we could build multi-level model for the collective job crafting and individual job crafting, and then studied and explored the effects of these two job crafting behaviors on employees’ job engagement and creativity.

Teacher Wang also answered the questions of the students at the scene, including the similarities and differences between OCB and job crafting, whether there is reverse causality between leader’s style and employee’s work behavior, and the measurement method of job crafting and the development situation of scale, etc. Associate Professor Zhao Xinyuan summarized this lecture and gave his thanks to Teacher Wang for his wonderful academic sharing.
