His major research areas include: economic sociology, entrepreneurship and economic development, organizations, and social inequality. Currently, He is working on several clusters of projects in these research areas. One cluster of the projects aims to understand the mechanisms through (as well as the contextual/institutional conditions under) which social capital and political capital affect entrepreneurial activities and performance using large-scale data from both China and world-wide surveys. For another cluster of projects, he is aiming to demonstrate how multiple, and sometimes competing, institutional logics affect organizational/entrepreneurial practices, new industry emergence, and income inequality patterns in China's transition economy. He has published articles in journals such as Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, World Development, among others.
