Review platforms increasingly rely on content moderation to manage undesirable reviews, yet empirical evidence on its behavioral impacts remains limited. This study examines how content folding, a moderation tool that hides guideline-violating reviews from default view, affects user compliance with platform guidelines. Exploiting a quasi-experimental observation in which a platform retroactively folded violating reviews submitted before and after a policy intervention, we employ a difference-in-difference-in-differences design to isolate the effect of content folding from that of the violations. Using data covering over 2 million reviews, we find that content folding decreases future violations by punished users. This effect is stronger among less experienced users, suggesting that compliance is more likely driven by norm internalization than the threat of punishment. However, we also find that punished users contribute less and are more likely to leave the platform. Finally, content folding decreases guideline violations by observing users, suggesting that the deterrence effect of punitive action toward violating users can spill over and enhance subsequent users' awareness of platform guidelines and compliance with them.
