Haiyang Li


Dr. Haiyang Li isProfessor of Strategic Management and Innovation at the Jesse H. Jones GraduateSchool of Business, Rice University. He earned a Bachelor and a Master ineconomics from Renmin University of China and received a Ph.D. from CityUniversity of Hong Kong. Before joining Rice University, he was on the facultyof Department of Management at Texas A&M University and Lingnan Universityof Hong Kong.

Dr. Li’s research interests focus on technology entrepreneurship and innovation(particularly in China’s transition economy), strategic alliances andmultinational firms’ innovation in emerging markets, as well as the growth ofChina's technology clusters. His articles on the above issues have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Marketing, Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Journal of Product Innovation Management,Management and Organization Review, Journal of High Technology ManagementResearch, Journal of InternationalBusiness Studies, and others.

Dr. Li is currentlyone of the chief editors (International) of QuarterlyJournal of Management, one of the most prestigious management journals inChina. He has also serves editorial review boards of many journals including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Management and Organization Review, and Oxford Handbooks Online (Business andManagement).

Dr. Li was ranked among the World’s top 15 innovation management scholars basedon top management and marketing journal publications (1991-2010) (Yang &Tao, 2012) and among the top 10 scholars in terms of individual contributionsto the empirical literature on China (2000-2005) (Quer, Claver & Rienda,2007). His work won the Best Paper Award for the Selling and Sales ManagementTrack at the American Marketing Association’s Winter Marketing Educators’Conference in 2001. His papers have been selected as finalists for best paperawards in the field of management and international business: Finalist for boththe GWU-CIBER Best Paper on Emerging Markets Award and the Skolkovo Best PaperAward at AOM annual conference in 2012; Finalist for the Best Paper in MacroManagement Award at International Association of Chinese Management andResearch (IACMR) in 2004; Finalist for the Haynes Prize and the AIB Best PaperAward at Academy of International Business (AIB) annual conference in 2003.Recently, his case “GE China Technology Center: Evolvingrole in global innovation” (Ivey Publishing 2015) won the 2016 EFMD CaseWriting Competition Award (the Bringing Technology to Market category).
